SOME MORE

Riding at full speed meant the return trip back to Cardinas took a fraction of the time. Grog had expressed some trepidation about returning to Ogdane and talking to his friends before reporting back to Twar. Arianee, who was openly irritated by Grog’s urge to return to Twar, made an argument for not returning to Ogdane until Grog was back to normal. A debate ensued as the group argued about talking to Grog before leaving Valeria while they considered the threat potentially posed by Tribbelz if they didn’t leave.

“Can’t we just port somewhere else? So we’re not in Valeria but we aren’t in Ogdane, either?” Nikole finally asked, frustrated by the cyclic argument. “None of us want to stay here in case a butt-hurt dragon comes looking for us, but none of us want to go there because of Grog’s sense of commitment to Twar. Surely there’s some middle ground?”

“I wouldn’t call it middle,” Tako mused, “but we can just port to Insulam.”

“But we don’t have anything to report to Elandria yet,” Arianee noted.

“Report to Elandria?” Grog asked, almost suspiciously.

“Never you mind,” Nikole smiled sweetly. “Just a quest I’m working on. It would be a quiet place, so I’m good with that if Grog is.”

“Why are you deferring the decision to me?” Grog asked, suspicion still lingering around his words.

“Well, I mean, it’s your call. It’s not technically being back in Ogdane, so technically you don’t have to go and report anything because you’re not actually back, right?” Nikole asked.

Grog thought for a long moment before slowly nodding his head. “Yes. Technically, I was asked to report back as soon as I returned to Ogdane, and I agreed. So as long as we aren’t in Ogdane, I’m not breaking my oath.”

With the decision finally made, the group walked to the port, Nikole dismissed Chewbarka, and Tako hired a mage. The group walked through the portal and onto the beaches of Insulam. Nikole immediately whistled for Chewbarka as Tako walked to the port mage who seemed to be stationed on the island to ferry the commune workers back and forth.

“We’re likely going to be here overnight,” Tako said as he returned to the group. “The mage is only on duty until sunset, which isn’t far off,” he said as he looked at the sky. “He said it was fine if we stayed, though, just made a point of letting me know he wouldn’t be back until the morning.”

Nikole watched as a few of the commune workers walked toward the mage and stood in line as if creating a queue. “Are the trees open for camping?”

“Why would we be camping?” Mace asked.

Nikole stared at him stupidly for a moment. “We’re spending the night out in the nature,” she said very slowly as if addressing someone who was dimwitted.

“Yes,” Mace replied, mimicking her slow tone.

“And amazingly enough, spending the night in the nature is called ‘camping’,” she said, almost as slowly.

Mace shook his head. “Maybe where you’re from. Here camping is when you’re waiting on an enemy to appear.
